OTT 6 Hohe Tauern – Großglockner and Schober Alps, July 2011

The first half of the route was essentially the same as that of the 1990 MGS camping trek, a 5-day trek along the western and southern flanks of the Großglockner from the Rudolsfhütte to Heiligenblut, with ascents of Medelzkopf (2760 m), Blaue Wand (2912 m), Kasteneck (2777 m) and Böses Weibl (3121 m) en route. The second half was continuous from Heiligenblut and was a 4½-day trek though the Schober Group including an exciting ‘via ferrata’ circuit of Wangenitzsee and an ascent of Petzeck, at 3283 m the 2nd highest in the group.

Route outline:   Day 1. Rudolsfhütte > Excursion Medelzkopf > Kalser Tauernhaus  2. Stüdlhütte  3. Excursion Blaue Wand > Excursion Kasteneck > Glorer Hütte (2 nights)  4. Excursion Böses Weibl  5. Heiligenblut (hotel)  6. Elberfelder Hütte  7. Lienzerhütte  8. Wangenitzseehütte (2 nights)  9. Excursion Petzeck  10. Mörtschach.
